Arduino UNO R3 not detected by usb cable

Postby sivateja95 » Wed Oct 24, 2012 2:18 pm

i recently bught an arduino R3 for my Science Exhibition and uploaded a code according to my needs
It was working quite well for quite a no. of days
and suddenly it stopped executing...................i connected to my laptop and computer but the arduino isnt detected
and even it isnt shown in the device manager.....not even as an unknown device....

Please help me ASAP

What was the last circuit & code you used which executed normally on your board?

If feasible post schematic and/or code snippet.

Also provide details regrading which OS and version of Arduino IDE you are using.

the code is as follows...:

const int LDR = A0; // set pin Analog 0 for LDR
const int MainsRelay = 2; // set pin 2 for 240v Relay
const int threshold = 300; // set threshold value of LDR(calibrate to your needs)
const int wire1 = 4; // set pin 4 for Keypad controller Pin 1
const int wire2 = 5; // set pin 5 for Keypad controller Pin 2
const int wire3 = 6; // set pin 6 for Keypad controller Pin 3
const int btnPin = A2;// set Analog 2 for MCB sensor
int btnVal = 0;// variable to store the MCB sensor's value
void SMS_error();// function to send the error message
int LDRval = 0; // variable to store the LDR value
int RelState = 0; //consider that relay is off at system boot

void setup() {

pinMode(LDR, INPUT); // set LDR as Input
pinMode(MainsRelay, OUTPUT); // set 240v relay as Output
pinMode(btnPin, INPUT); // set MCB sensor as Input
pinMode(wire1, OUTPUT); // set Keypad controller Pin 1 as OUTPUT
pinMode(wire2, OUTPUT); // set Keypad controller Pin 2 as OUTPUT
pinMode(wire3, OUTPUT); // set Keypad controller Pin 3 as OUTPUT
digitalWrite(MainsRelay,LOW); // set the state of the 240v relay as LOW, during system bootup
}

void loop() {

LDRval = analogRead(LDR);
btnVal = analogRead(btnPin);

if (LDRval > threshold && RelState == 0)//SMS Recieved and Relay is OFF
{
digitalWrite(MainsRelay,HIGH);// Turn the relay on
RelState = 1;
}
else if (LDRval > threshold && RelState == 1)//SMS Recieved and Relay is OFF
{
digitalWrite(MainsRelay,LOW);// Turn the relay on
RelState = 0;
}

if (btnVal > threshold)// if the state-detection sensor is tripped
{
SMS_error();//send the error SMS
}

}

void SMS_error(){
/* Function to control the keypad controller to send the error SMS.
YOU NEED TO EDIT THIS ACCORDING TO YOUR PHONE. THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE CODE*/

digitalWrite(wire2,HIGH);//relay on
delay(1000);// calibrate the delay to your phone. Remember that the delay is in milliseconds(1000 milliseconds = 1 second)
digitalWrite(wire2,LOW);//relay off
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire2,HIGH);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire2,LOW);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire2,HIGH);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire2,LOW);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire2,HIGH);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire2,LOW);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire2,HIGH);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire2,LOW);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire3,HIGH);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire3,LOW);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire2,HIGH);
delay(1000);
digitalWrite(wire2,LOW);
delay(1000);
}

i use windows 7 and the version of IDE is arduino 1.0.1....

There might be a problem in the USB Connection to the Computer. Is the USB cable able to provide Power to the Board (On Led).
If you are using a USB Hub, try to connect the Arduino directly to the PC. Also, remove all external circuitry (physical/ hardware connections) from the board.
Just plug in the bare board and try to plug it in the PC (with the Device Manager opened in front to notice any activity)

See the Arduino TroubleShooting Guide.

yes the USB cable is able to provide Power to the Board
the LED is switched on
i am not using any usb hub
i removed evrything and i tried connecting barely only the arduino
and there is no change in the device manager and it is undisturbed.....the device manager is not even recognizing it as an unknown device
there is no trace of the arduino UNO rev3 in the device manager where as i have already installed the driver for UNO rev3...
:(

There might be a possibility about the ATmega16U2 being damaged. You may try to put your Uno in DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode and see if it gets detected as a Composite device rather than a normal Uno R3.

You need to reset your 16U2 chip by shorting Reset pin (of 16U2) with Ground. See this Page [DFU Programming 8U2] from Official Arduino website. Find the picture from the following section:
Reset the 8u2
To do this, briefly bridge the reset pin with the ground. The pins are located near the USB connector, as shown in this picture. Connect them briefly with a piece of wire.

After you have successfully put your Uno R3 in DFU Mode (it should work hopefully), you need to do the following:
1.) Download Atmel's FLIP Utility here.
2.) Download the latest firmware file for 16U2 from Arduino's github - USB to Serial firmware (16U2 Uno R3 .hex file from Arduino).
3.) Upload the newly downloaded hex file to your Board using FLIP.

i tried to short the reset button....
but there was no activity in the arduino....not even the led flashing
also
the device manager doesnt recognise the arduino still
what should i do??

Can you elaborate your problem?
Were you able to work with your device before the problem started?
